Long Arm Quilting – What is it?

What is Longarm Quilting and what are the Benefits of Using a Longarm Machine?

Thanks to technology, there are a few different ways we quilters can sew our quilts together these days. Once upon a time, the only way to do your quilting fabric was by hand. Nowadays, you can finish it up on your home sewing machine or even send it off to get professional longarm machine processing done for you.

If you’ve yet to discover long arm quilting, then we’d like to supply you with the detail on this new trend.

What Is Longarm Quilting?

Using a quilting machine that is larger than the average one, longarm quilting has become a popular choice for many people.

These machines load the top of your quilt, batting and back into a metal frame, and sew the three layers together. The machine head rolls vertically and horizontally, which allows it to quilt while the fabric stays still.

Depending on the type of machine, the operation may be done manually or managed by a computer, so that designs can be quilted automatically.

Preparing for Long Arm Quilting

Please do not baste your quilt – it will only result in additional preparation charges for us to take out the basting. Press all seams well with a steam iron.

Your quilt batting needs to be a minimum of 4 inches (10cm) wider on each side, and 4 inches (10cm) longer on the top and bottom than your quilt top.

Your quilt backing needs to be a minimum of 5 inches (12.5cm) wider on each side, and 5 inches (12.5cm) longer on the top and bottom of your quilt top. This is necessary to attach your quilt successfully to the quilting frame.

No embellishments are to be sewn to the quilt top prior to quilting, please.

The quilt top and backing should be clipped free of loose threads on both the right and wrong sides of each of the top and the backing.

Tops and backings should be pressed, ready for quilting, to avoid additional preparation charges

At Ezy Quiltz and Stitching, we offer an onsite E2E professional Long Arm Quilting Service as well as an optional binding service.
